2009: The year that was
December 16, 2009
I love my work here at Listen Up. I admit I am a bit of a news junkie by nature. I am also a committed Christian who believes God takes an active interest in the affairs of men. So having the opportunity each week - to dig into the news to look for how God might be at work through the lives of people connected to the biggest stories of the day – can feel like a gift.
It’s fun to conduct research on topics that fascinate, speak to interesting people, learn new things and explore fresh angles on issues our society wrestles with. But it’s also challenging and humbling, for it may be a cliché, but it’s true the more I learn, the more I realize I have to learn.
Still, as I worked on putting our “2009 Year In Review” show together, I did find myself reflecting momentarily on insights gleaned over the previous 12 months. Here are a few of them:
- From our shows delving into the economic recession: Material things are not the be-all and end-all of human life.
- From our Faith in Obama show: Even the powerful and mighty have spiritual lives and needs.
- When we explored the Atheist bus ads campaign we were reminded that: Man cannot scientifically prove the existence of God. Neither can man disprove the existence of God.
- At Listen Up, we believe God cares deeply for the weakest and most vulnerable in our world, and that includes children. So while investigating whether or not there is a crisis in care for children in State care, we learned that: We sacrifice children to the god of materialism when we put career, privilege, promotion and wealth ahead of them.
- The intersection of faith and science is always fascinating. From experts, we heard: Science is powerful and useful in its sphere. But there’s much more to the world than just what science can discover.
May we all enter 2010 in the spirit of continuing that discovery!

I love the way you wove the news stories of 2009 into a coherent and harmonious flow. Your wrap up at the end was thought provoking to say the least - well done on a good year-ender program!
