Kenneth Sherman is a Democrat Abroad living in Hamilton, Ontario. He was
born in Mid-town Manhattan and travels frequently with his wife and children
to France and the U.S.
When asked what happened in the election, Ken said that the Democrats lost
a sense of how important same-sex marriage and abortion issues were in this
election. The democratic party, though it has many Christians in it, does not
know how to work with Christians like Republicans do. When asked how do we
work at making peace, he said it will be hard to find common ground now
because fundamentalists are trying to have their views enshrined in law and it
is going to be very difficult to reach through that barrier. His own opinion
is if we believe in the constitution, there's something wrong with legislating
one's faith. Jesus wouldn't. Social justice values elevate all humanity and
protect the rights of all. He believes the election hinged on Carl Rove's
organizing on the same-sex marriage issue with referendums in 13 states and
bringing out the conservative base and organizing a political scheme to elect
George W. Bush on moral values as defined by same-sex marriage and abortion.
Uriel Domb is the President and CEO of Telespace Ltd, one of the leading
satellite communications consulting companies in the world today. Born in
Israel in 1942, he attended the Reali School and served in the IAF. He has a
BS in Applied Mathematics, an MS in Astronautics, and an MS in Operations
Research. Though he has lived in Toronto since 1978, he holds US citizenship
and is a member of Republicans Abroad.
Claudia Brown is an American citizen, living in Toronto. She has degrees in
Design, Drama and Education, with a special focus on medieval religious art
and theatre, and is currently the Executive Director of the St Philip Neri
House chaplaincy for the Catholic comminity at Ryerson University. She and her
husband, David, have three sons, the oldest of whom is a Second Lieutenant in
the US Marine Corps. Claudia is a member of Republicans Abroad.
Stephen Scharper is an American citizen and a member of Democrats Abroad.
He is an assistant professor with the department for the study of religion and
an associate of the Institute for Environmental Studies, where he teaches
courses on religion and ecology. He is author of Redeeming the Time: A
Political Theology of the Environment (Continuum 1997) and co-author of The
Green Bible (Orbis 1993). This is adapted from a talk he gave at a recent
conference, Green Dreams: Exploring Environmental Commitments in the Real
World.
The discussion with this panel of three began with Claudia responding to
Lorna's comment about moral values deciding the election for 22% of voters.
Claudia feels the US war effort was actually more important - that in the exit
polling, the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism were each lower than moral
values but together, they add up to 38%. Uriel agreed, feeling the election
was about the war and fighting terrorism internationally but changed to faith
issues later. Stephen asserted that the politics of fear has driven the
victory for George W. Bush, that people are afraid of terrorist attacks and of
a switch in government mid-war. That won the election, he says. He cited that
one-third of Bush supporters feel that weapons of mass destruction have been
found even though US and UN investigators found no WMD on the scale they were
looking for.
Uriel urged Canada to get itself together since we've stayed out of
international politics for the last 4 years. Stephen rebutted that Canada's
international role is peacemaking. Canada has troops in Afghanistan and has
been involved in training police, etc in Iraq. He quipped that Canada has been
called the "designated driver for the US." Stephen called the war
immoral and pointed out that it did not have the approval of the UN or the
Pope or many countries.
And joining us in studio also were Andrew VanDoodewaard, President of the
newly formed Canadian Chrisitan Coalition and Christine Cuthbert - the
Coalition's communications expert. See their website at: www.ccicinc.org
for information on their upcoming convention. The Canadian Christian Coalition
is not affiliated with the American Coalition, but aims to speak for Christian
Canadians who want representation in politics and Canadian life.
The Christian Coalition International Canada is a national organization
dedicated to the promotion and defense of Judaeo-Christian values will be
holding a Convention under the Theme "Judaeo-Christian Values In A
Secular Society."
The Convention seeks to address the serious erosion of freedoms as result
of co-ordinated government and court actions in re-writing the foundational
laws of Canadian society in a completely new ideological framework of moral
relativism. This is taking place in Canada despite the fact that nearly 80 per
cent of Canadians registered themselves on the 2002 census as Christians.
The Christian Coalition International Canada supports the public
acknowledgement of the Creator of the Universe, our God, Jesus Christ our
Saviour, in accordance with historic traditions of Canada. The Christian
Coalition International Canada, however also recognizes the freedom for all
Canadians to practice other religions based on their traditions and religious
heritage.
All moral laws of human action derive from God as the source of moral
consciousness and law, in whose image humanity was created. Consonant Judaeo-Christian
principles are important to the well functioning of a sound society.
Nevertheless Judaeo-Christian values, which have been the bedrock of the
Canadian legal system, are in danger of being completely erased from public
life in Canada, unless Christians respond to this challenge and rise to their
defense. This defense is best co-ordinated in a political framework, which the
Christian Coalition International Canada strives to develop and provide as
both an effective and articulate voice for the Christian Community. The
Convention will take place in Toronto, Ontario at the Toronto Airport Marriott
Hotel on November 19th, 2004. This event will feature a banquet on Friday
evening featuring prominent speakers, an insightful video on Judaeo-Christian
concerns and award winning entertainment. The registration fee is Can. $85.00,
per person, which includes both the banquet and entertainment. A full program
schedule will be published in the near future.
Confirmed Speakers include: Ravi Zacharias Ministries of Canada: Mr. Joe
Boot, Canadian Director (keynote speaker) Former Concerned Women of America
President and Strategic Consultant: Ms. Sandy Rios California Christian
Coalition: Mr. Samuel Anderson, Chairman Real Women of Canada: Mrs. Gwen
Landolt, Vice-President CCIC President: Mr. Andrew VanDoodewaard Members of
Parliament: Various Members of the Senate: The Honourable Senator Anne C.
Cools
The Convention is for Christian Leaders, Pastors, and Citizens concerned
about the serious erosion of Judaeo-Christian values from Canadian public
life, society, and the ensuing moral decay, and aims to address the urgency of
a broad based Christian response to the advancing secular humanist agenda.
Christians are urged to attend this Convention as the upcoming legal
decisions by the Government of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada will
influence public policy and re-shape Canada in ways that will be very harmful
to Canadians, the Christian Community, society as a whole and have serious
consequences for the Christian Church's ability to promote moral teachings for
years to come.
Freedom in Canada is already restricted in major ways by Human Rights
tribunals, compulsory political correctness in education, broadcasting, and
Criminal Code penalties for public statements concerning immoral sexual
practices deemed in violation of protected sexual orientation minorities
enumerated in the Criminal Code.
A nations ability to maintain it's moral fibre and integrity, is it's
ability to foster stable and healthy families is fundamental to it's
stability, and when these pillars of society are being undermined by radical
activists in courts, parliament, government, media, and education, society is
in danger of disintegrating into chaos and disorder. The social costs of
government policy to dismantle the traditional moral values from the framework
of Canadian law could be staggering in decades to come.
Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel offers a special convention rate of: Can
$109.00 per room for those travelling from out of town locations. Anyone
interested may register directly online with www.ccicinc.org or contact the
Christian Coalition International Canada Inc. on the phone 905-824-6526 or by
e-mail: ccintlcda@aol.com to book participation in this event.
And also on the show to give a sense of a completion, Dr. Brian Stiller who
is the president of Tyndale University and Seminary in Toronto. Dr. Stiller is
the author of Jesus and Ceasar, published by Castle Quay, and several other
books. Dr. Stiller talked with Lorna about Canada's emerging and renewal in
the church and the lessons Canadians can learn for bringing moral views into
political choices. As a Christian, Dr. Stiller says he has empathy for Bush's
worldview but he feels Iraq's been handled with such incompetence, and the
poor state of medicare for such a rich country looks bad on the newly elected
President. Dr. Stiller believes success in political lobbying happens when
faith groups unite and work in an environment of consensus with secular views,
co-operating within the pluralism that Canada embodies.
