Hope For Haiti

Today we’re going to bring you the bizarre political realities of Haiti. Our guests today are a wide spectrum from a former playboy bunny, a desperate family who recently fought off a kidnapping, Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Haitians themselves. Haiti is fascinating – despite its best ever election process - it could be on the brink of collapse. For centuries, Haiti has fought itself politically, now the poorest country in the western Hemisphere, things may be changing, but not without a price tag. Increased violence, unemployment and political revolting have scarred this small Caribbean nation where only 1 in 2 can read and the life expectancy hovers around 50 years.

Into the turbulent fight for democracy in Haiti, Canada has been deeply involved in its most recent election. Murder and sacrifice are a reality of that work – in December, a retired Canadian RCMP officer Mark Bourque, was killed in an ambush in Haiti while he helped prepare for the Haitian election. And Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley, chaired the International Mission monitoring Haiti’s election.

Today we look at the Hope for Haiti under such desolate circumstances.

From Dept of State; Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs; March 2006 "The first round for the election of the President and the Parliament took place peacefully on Feb 7, 2006. An impressive turnout estimated at over 60% of registered voters caused some logistical difficulties rapidly overcome. Overall, those elections have been considered free, honest and democratic by the national and international observers. Rene Preval, former President (1996-2001) and former ally to Aristide, won the presidential election with 51,15%. Partial results had shown he fell short of the majority and triggered demonstrations against alleged fraud. The later decision of the Electoral Council not to count blank ballots gave the victory to Preval. The legislature will likely be broadly representative with most of the senators' and deputies' seats decided during the run-off scheduled on March 19, 2006" From MiamiHerald.com " Two members of Congress, after meeting with the President-elect of Haiti, expressed high hopes for that beleaguered country's economic turnaround. Haitian manufacturers estimate that the aid bill, aptly called HOPE, would create about 40 000 textile jobs over the next two year. It would be more than twice the number the country currently has. 'We see this as a new beginning and new opportunities', said Rep. Waters who flew to the Caribbean nation on Monday, March 20, 2006 to affirm the United States commitment to Haiti and Preval."

Haiti: A country in turmoil – Feb. 23, 2006

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/haiti/

SUSIE KRABACHER’S STORY as told to Lorna Dueck

Susie, Are you really ready to have these people adopt babies?

Yes, we don’t charge for adoptions - not a dime. It’s best to go through the government of Haiti. We’re starting as soon as the new president takes his seat. This is impossible without the government’s aid and now we believe the government will become stable. - The average time it takes for adoption is 9-12 months – my dream for every one of the orphans is to be placed. We have 3 orphanages, 6 schools and a hospital, taking care of 3300 children. They have all been legally abandoned and some are handicapped and terminally ill.

150 ready for adoption – about 60 % are severely handicapped and terminally ill - when we got them some are so far malnourished they had their systems shut down and disabilities resulted.

She was on Oprah a couple of times – and a lot of people are really interested in adopting handicapped kids.

What spiritual realities do you encounter in this work?

We have been under spiritual attack especially for the last ten years because I believe in bringing hope for a Savior is really stepping on Satan’s toes

We’re stepping on Voodoo - a lot of people think it’s a cool religion, but it wouldn’t be possible to exaggerate the effect of Voodoo on the country

I have 150 employees --every time they are sick they come running in saying someone has put a curse on them and this response even after doing daily Bible Studies with them

Every time I go into the morgue there are vats of human body parts. Remember the Miami woman who went down to Haiti and came back with a human head in her suitcase two weeks ago?

Even having our funerals - for my own self I do it so these little kids know they were loved.

How do you spiritually equip yourself?

I am an avid studier of my Bible – there are day’s depression overcomes me – it’s overwhelming. Paul, the apostle, is my hero. I think of myself like him “I was the worst of sinners” - that is why God chose me to do this work.

How did you come to follow Jesus?

I became a Christian when I was 8. My grandfather, from 4-8 years old, raped me. When my mom finally caught him I knew why - it was because I constantly prayed. I prayed as he did it, after he did it. Due to lots of tragedy and confused boundaries my mom lost her mind after that and so I went to many foster homes.

As time went by, I lost all sense of boundaries and lost God and left him in the dust…

My brother was showing real signs of homosexuality and he was only 12. He had been raped too and I could see him falling apart and I wanted him out of the house. So when Playboy came along it seemed like the only answer, I was only 17 and I posed nude. Playboy is not a good thing for anyone. Not for those who look at it or for men and women who fashion themselves after it. However look at its popularity – its one of Satan’s greatest tools.

I decided in my mind that it was okay and so my boundaries changed bit by bit. Playboy was my agent and I did 75 different photo shoots with them and traveled all over the world representing them. I worked with them for 10 years and I was thrown into the middle of every kind of sin you could imagine.

Satan brought me to the lowest low you could ever want – I married one of America’s Most Wanted Men. He had five identities, I was married to him for two years, and coming back from a European trip to Aspen we were stopped at a roadblock by FBI and Aspen police and they pulled him out of the car by another name. I yelled, “You’ve got the wrong guy “– but the sheriff knew me and said “Susie, this is not who you think it is”.

My husband took all my money and put it into another account. I ended up walking up and down the streets of Aspen and knocked on doors looking for cleaning jobs and took work as a maid. On the third day of knocking on doors, a paraplegic woman in a wheelchair took me in and I worked for her.

My husband was threatening me from jail and I had no money for a lawyer to get a divorce.

I went to the nearest lawyer’s office and traded cooking and cleaning for the divorce lawyer’s help. The next day he had 40 shirts in his office for me to iron.

That’s Joe! That was the upturn. We’ve been married 17 years.

I met Jesus when I started going to church (the day after we got engaged). I got up and said, I’m going to church, and I don’t care. He hadn’t been to church since he was a toddler and he came with me to church. It happened to be communion Sunday (by the way, we still go to that church). Joe (he is 6.10 tall) thought he was getting invited to come to the front. He was completely hung over at the time. He was given the communion plate anyway, and he came to the Lord in spite of his state. That was 17 years ago and today he is a mighty man of God!

I moved through the church thing for about 3-4 years until I got the GRACE thing. One day it finally hit me. Up until then I was on a guilt trip with God. Something in my heart caused me to imagine myself standing before God. All I’d have to say is “thanks God, I had a great life and I was happy” That didn’t seem good enough to me …

So I thought, “well God – what if I could say- I have held the poor and that’s why you made me”.

What would I need to do to be able to say that? The first time I looked into the eyes of a dying child – I realized I was helping an angel go to heaven.

The first time I slept in a slum and I saw painful death – I felt equal to some form of humanity, I never felt I fit in until I really fit in with the poor. It was devastating for me to see it

The believe that the reason I had to go through such hell as a child was to be doing what I do now.

How do you sustain yourself in this work?

The Holy Spirit is what has really, really equipped me -- He gives us the supernatural words to be protected and sustained in what I do. Every day I put myself in a little corner to have my prayer time. Every day I pray and read my bible. I know when I’m with my Lord I’m invincible. I truly believe those prayers, and prayers of my girlfriends, and of my church and especially of little kids, - the prayer makes this happen.

God took my childhood away so I could be an adult kid – I really, really can be a kid with them. I’ve been doing that for 12 years now.

What are the spiritual realities you encounter?

I see the demon possessed. A child in my care now, Junior, bit me and fought me and the sounds that came out of his mouth - I can’t even tell you. I felt someone had raped the child. When the government heard a child was in my care that had not been bribed to me – they took him from me and demanded my generator in exchange. Four months. Later I went back to the government building and I heard screaming from the building. As I walked downstairs, the screaming got louder and I saw something moving in an outdoor crowd of pigs. It was Junior, living with those pigs. I crawled under the barbed wire and took him – and he’s been in my possession ever since. I’ve had him 7 years, and I’m certain he is demon possessed and we just can’t seem to pray it out.

My bible study group and I are going to try and fast and pray now for Junior.

I have twice been asked to be an Observer of the elections – it’s a real honor. Aristide’s was a corrupt election, I saw it.

A year ago when Aristide fled the country, the Chimera or secret police service (the ghost) held 62 of my handicapped and terminally ill orphans and employee’s hostage. I had to fly in from Aspen and negotiate for them.

Can you comment on this election?

This one – I don’t know what to say on this election. I’ve been completely confounded by this election. They have found partially burned ballot boxes … I don’t know, but am praying with all my heart this works for the sake of justice.

Who sent you to observe?

Organization of American States – honored observer and traveled observer.

What’s your opinion of the new government?

Preval was worthless last time he was President. This time he says he’s learned and I have to admit he has nothing to do with Aristide this time If he has truly separated from Aristide, we have hope.

Aristide made Voodoo the national religion just before he left. The Church defrocked him

The New York Sun – 2003/4 – it talks about the sacrifice of a child (We have the article)

A child was taken from my abandoned child unit and sacrificed. I had just left the day before. It was a big story. Aristide was involved in that.

How dangerous has it become for you?

March 2/05 – The Wall St. Journal reported an assassination attempt on my life by the Chimera. By the grace of God, my command of Creole got perfect that night and I was able to talk to the guy and he had mercy because I had helped one of his friends. I even got my car back washed.

I pray every day on my knees that Preval will seek Jesus. It will be only thing that will heal this country - the only thing. A Christian coalition party even ran – loads of money was donated but they came in 17 out of 33. But God has a bigger plan -- He can change Preval’s heart?

I would stake my heart on the fact that if godly men and women rule that country, it will thrive. The poverty will go away. SIN rules the land. Haiti is a graveyard for missionaries. If something does not change, this is fertile ground for terrorism – poverty breeds anger, and anger breeds hatred and that’s exactly what we have here – the Haitians think America can help them but they don’t – and so they hate Americans right now.

In every effort – corruption has stood between the poor and us.

I have been sued so many times by government officials – they want my land, my truck.

Why has the Press not reported you are a Christian?

I always, always tell the reporters I am a Christian and Satan does not allow it to get in the news. The last time I went to Haiti (because of the election) many people wanted to travel with me, and the only thing I asked was “please tell people that I just want God to be proud of his servant”. I want people to see God in me; I want to never waste an opportunity for god.

Even Oprah cut me off when I tried to say my testimony.

The guy who started EBay founded a production company and now they are doing a movie on my life. For a whole year I fought back and forth that my Christian story be in there and that they can tell my story about the rape when I was little - everything. The only thing I ask is that you represent my life now as a Christian – and it blew the deal – but I prayed and prayed and my pastor called and we got signed. The testimony will be in the movie.

I just finished my book, Angels of a lower flight – it has gone to editor but I don’t have a publisher yet.

The book is about coming back to God – its my testimony to my Savior - it is really open and straightforward – even forgiven sin has consequences and I talk about it and also the blessings. I have seen a lot of pain. My brother was gay, got Aids, suffered, and killed himself at age 26.

Do you have children of your own?

We made a conscious decision to not have children because I could not leave a child to go care for those in Haiti

Is it okay to you that your faith is quiet?

Jesus never went out into the world and said ‘I’m a Christian’, He just went out on their level - if I went in shouting ‘I’m a Christian’ – they would never hang out with me.they would feel I’m a threat.

The Social Motivations of Haitian Voodoo

by Jamie Carrick

(Jamie Carrick is studying world religions at University of Calgary and has watched his family operate an aid agency, CAUSE CANADA, in Haiti.)

Although 80% of Haitians profess to be Roman Catholic and 16% testify to be Protestant, it is interesting to note that roughly half of population of Haiti today practices Voodoo. In the Voodoo tradition, the possession of an individual by supernatural beings, called Lwa, is understood as a form of blessing. Voodoo is centered on religious ceremonies where, with the use of music and dancing, Lwa spirits are beckoned and possession experiences are instigated. It is said that during the possession ritual the god comes to you, possesses you, mounts you, and you become a god yourself. Although the subject temporarily forfeits their identity during the Lwa possession experience, the individual in fact becomes so much more than his previous self. Because the soul is in the presence of divinity, for a while it also becomes divine. Voodoo possession rituals focus heavily on music and dancing. Eccentric Voodoo dancing is both a means of instigating possession by a Lwa, and of recognizing that a possession has occurred, judging on the ferocity of the dance. Although the Voodoo dance may appear disorganized and undisciplined, it is an integral part of the worship of the Lwa. Spirit possession rituals provoke experiences resulting in a loss of self, and an escape from reality. This religious escapism may aid suffering groups by allowing them to momentarily get away from the harsh realities of their difficult lives while in the possession of a supernatural entity. For example, Haitian slaves were subjected to the cruelty and exploitation of slavery for several hundred years and maintained their native religion despite the Christian pressure of Colonial powers. The social motivation of the Voodoo possession ritual is especially important today considering the fact that Haiti is currently the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. AIDS is also an increasing concern as currently one in twenty Haitians has the disease, and it is the main cause of death among women of reproductive age. It is also important to note that because illness in Voodoo is related to magic, many Haitian peasants who suffer from HIV or Aids are more likely to seek help from their local Voodoo priest than from a government clinic. The continued appeal of the Voodoo possession ritual in Haiti is understandable as it provides a temporary escape from reality. The spirit-possession experience allows Haitian Voodoo practitioners, despite their humility and poverty on Earth, to effectively become one with the gods.

ALL ABOUT HAITI

Haiti occupies 10,700 square miles on the western side of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. It has a population of 8.1 million, made up of 95% black, 5% mulatto and white and 80% Roman Catholic with roughly one-half of the population practicing Voodoo.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with an average income of one dollar a day. 80% of the population lives in abject poverty. 66% of the population works in agriculture – mainly coffee, sugarcane, mangoes, corn, wood, sorghum and rice -- but only 28% of Haiti's land is arable. 60% of imports -- food, manufactured goods, machinery and fuels -- come from the US and over 80% of exports -- mangoes, oils, coffee and manufactures -- go to the US. Haiti endures huge environmental issues in the form of extensive deforestation, soil erosion and inadequate supplies of potable water.

Haiti was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492 but the Spanish Colony surrendered to France in 1697. A slave revolt began in 1791 and finally gained independence in 1804 (World's first Black Republic). Haiti temporarily joined with the Dominican Republic in 1822 until they became separate nations again in 1844. US military occupied Haiti from 1915-1934, due to Haiti's unstable political and economic conditions. Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier took power in 1957 followed by Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier in 1971 until February 7, 1986, when he fled to exile in France. Fighting between the various factions of the former Duvalier regimes and military continued for the next 5 years. Haiti's first free and fair elections were held in December 1990, electing former Catholic priest Jen-Bertrand Aristide. President Aristide served 7 months until he was ousted by a military coup in September. The UN imposed a worldwide oil and arms embargo on Haiti in June 1993 and on October 14, 1994 US troops brought President Aristide back and the US/UN peacekeeping troops remained until December 31, 1999. Aristide was elected again in 2000 but departed in February of 2004. An interim government served since Aristide’s departure until just this month when Rene Preval was declared president of Haiti, with 51% of the vote in an election marred by claims of irregularities.

What is Voodoo?

Voodoo is a religious system based mainly on beliefs and practices brought from Africa into the Western world, although now incorporating other components and having further developed through time and circumstance. The name "Voodoo" comes from the Fon word for the system of worshipping, and seeking assistance and oracles from divine power, as this was channeled through the visible presence of a specific kind of living creature. The astral presence of the Loa, and their manifestation through possessed devotees, however, now apparently suffices. Voodoo uses spells and conjuring for personal gain or to hurt others.

THE ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING

By Esperandieu Pierre

Nov. 16, 2005

*This is the real life account of Esperandieu’s family – Dianne, his wife, and their three children, Nathan, Charissa, and Lemeul.*

Kidnappings are indeed a reality in Haiti. But when you experience one close to home the reality seems so unreal.

This morning at 7.30 am Dianne left to drop off the kids to school. Less than five minutes from our home, she was stopped by two “police officers and a swat team officer” The normal procedure was followed

“Police Officer “- Bonjour, driver License and Car Papers Please

Dianne - Bonjour, and handed her license and the car papers to the “officer”

“Police Officer” - Turn off the car and step out of the vehicle.

  • Give me the keys and sit in the back with the kids. We need to take you all to our base. (Not normal procedure)

Dianne - Why?

“Police Officer” - We’re taking you to the downtown police station. No need to be

afraid just do as I say and get in the vehicle.

Dianne - NO

With that No Dianne realized something was “fishy” so she opened the kid’s door, Got Charissa out, and shouted to Nathan to get out. Nathan got out but was pushed back in the car by the other “swat officer” on his side. When Dianne saw this she opened the door on her side and grabbed Nathan inside the car. With Nathan and Charissa beside her, she ran in the streets, but was reminded by Nathan that Lemuel is still in the car. Dianne ran after the car, dropping in the process her wallet and glasses, she grabbed the passenger side of the car as they attempted to make a U-turn. All the time Dianne was being dragged with the car and was punched in her face about 3 to four times by one of the “officers”.

The car sped off and Dianne dropped in the streets with bruises to her hands, jaw, side, knees and back.

GREAT NEWS

Dianne started flagging down incoming vehicles, the first didn’t stop (later we found out this hero chased the so-called “officers” to help……..

Dianne and the kids got in a car driven by a woman, she (Dianne) screaming to the driver to “follow the car, they just kidnapped my baby”. The woman, who happened to be a close friend of our family, drove Dianne and the kids directly home, where they explained the situation to me. (Pierre) I left with a few neighbors and drove in the direction of the vehicle, knowing that God was so much in control. And He assured me with His peace that all is well.

Praise God also for anti-theft system. The so called “police officers” were not aware that the anti-theft system would cause the car to shut off whenever the door is opened and so all three were surprised to find that the car would not budge about a mile down the road. Since they did not know where the reset secret button was, they took off on foot, leaving Lemuel on the ground and their police uniforms and holsters in our car.

GOD IS GOOD - ALL THE TIME.

My family is so thankful to God for his protection. (That is an understatement, really) To date the police department is investigating this plot and we’re hoping that the criminals are caught soon. Also we’re hoping that the process to get the vehicle returned along with applying for a new driver’s license and identification card would not take “forever” as is the norm here.

Indeed thank you all for standing with us in prayer, we are all rejoicing that Satan’s plans were foiled and the Lord has gotten all the GLORY.

Please continue to pray for:-

Dianne- she’s in good spirits although now walks with a limp and is now squinting to see

and read. She is also very disturbed emotionally.

Nathan- - He was bruised when he fell out of the car. He’s expressed fear for police

officers here, since we have no idea who to trust.

Charissa - she just asked that you pray that God continue to keep her safe.

Charissa cries sporadically and has “panic attacks” when she remember

what happened today, please pray for complete healing in her mind.
