Cracking down on pornography, Listen Up tackles the silent sin.

In a culture where accessibility to pornography is getting much easier and the media assaults us with a parade of lusty images, there is a growing concern over what affect this is having on us.

SUSIE SCOTT KRABACHER & HER STORY

www.haitichildren.com

Susie Scott Krabacher is founder and president of the Sharing and Mercy Foundation dedicated to saving, feeding and educating the poorest of the poor in Haiti.  Susie spends nearly every waking hour working with Haitian children and draws no salary.

SUSIE KRABACHER’S STORY as told to Lorna Dueck

How did you come to follow Jesus?

I became a Christian when I was 8. My grandfather, from 4-8 years old, raped me. When my mom finally caught him I knew why - it was because I constantly prayed. I prayed as he did it, after he did it. Due to lots of tragedy and confused boundaries my mom lost her mind after that and so I went to many foster homes.

As time went by, I lost all sense of boundaries and lost God and left him in the dust…

My brother was showing real signs of homosexuality and he was only 12. He had been raped too and I could see him falling apart and I wanted him out of the house. So when Playboy came along it seemed like the only answer, I was only 17 and I posed nude. Playboy is not a good thing for anyone. Not for those who look at it or for men and women who fashion themselves after it. However look at its popularity – its one of Satan’s greatest tools.

I decided in my mind that it was okay and so my boundaries changed bit by bit. Playboy was my agent and I did 75 different photo shoots with them and traveled all over the world representing them. I worked with them for 10 years and I was thrown into the middle of every kind of sin you could imagine.

Satan brought me to the lowest low you could ever want – I married one of America’s Most Wanted Men. He had five identities, I was married to him for two years, and coming back from a European trip to Aspen we were stopped at a roadblock by FBI and Aspen police and they pulled him out of the car by another name. I yelled, “You’ve got the wrong guy “– but the sheriff knew me and said “Susie, this is not who you think it is”.

My husband took all my money and put it into another account. I ended up walking up and down the streets of Aspen and knocked on doors looking for cleaning jobs and took work as a maid. On the third day of knocking on doors, a paraplegic woman in a wheelchair took me in and I worked for her.

My husband was threatening me from jail and I had no money for a lawyer to get a divorce.

I went to the nearest lawyer’s office and traded cooking and cleaning for the divorce lawyer’s help. The next day he had 40 shirts in his office for me to iron.

That’s Joe! That was the upturn. We’ve been married 17 years.

I met Jesus when I started going to church (the day after we got engaged). I got up and said, I’m going to church, and I don’t care. He hadn’t been to church since he was a toddler and he came with me to church. It happened to be communion Sunday (by the way, we still go to that church). Joe (he is 6.10 tall) thought he was getting invited to come to the front. He was completely hung over at the time. He was given the communion plate anyway, and he came to the Lord in spite of his state. That was 17 years ago and today he is a mighty man of God!

I moved through the church thing for about 3-4 years until I got the GRACE thing. One day it finally hit me. Up until then I was on a guilt trip with God. Something in my heart caused me to imagine myself standing before God. All I’d have to say is “thanks God, I had a great life and I was happy” That didn’t seem good enough to me …

So I thought, “well God – what if I could say- I have held the poor and that’s why you made me”.

What would I need to do to be able to say that? The first time I looked into the eyes of a dying child – I realized I was helping an angel go to heaven.

The first time I slept in a slum and I saw painful death – I felt equal to some form of humanity, I never felt I fit in until I really fit in with the poor. It was devastating for me to see it

The believe that the reason I had to go through such hell as a child was to be doing what I do now.

How do you sustain yourself in this work?

The Holy Spirit is what has really, really equipped me -- He gives us the supernatural words to be protected and sustained in what I do. Every day I put myself in a little corner to have my prayer time. Every day I pray and read my bible. I know when I’m with my Lord I’m invincible. I truly believe those prayers, and prayers of my girlfriends, and of my church and especially of little kids, - the prayer makes this happen.

God took my childhood away so I could be an adult kid – I really, really can be a kid with them. I’ve been doing that for 12 years now.

Susie, Are you really ready to have these people adopt babies?

Yes, we don’t charge for adoptions - not a dime. It’s best to go through the government of Haiti. We’re starting as soon as the new president takes his seat. This is impossible without the government’s aid and now we believe the government will become stable. - The average time it takes for adoption is 9-12 months – my dream for every one of the orphans is to be placed. We have 3 orphanages, 6 schools and a hospital, taking care of 3300 children. They have all been legally abandoned and some are handicapped and terminally ill.

150 ready for adoption – about 60 % are severely handicapped and terminally ill - when we got them some are so far malnourished they had their systems shut down and disabilities resulted.

She was on Oprah a couple of times – and a lot of people are really interested in adopting handicapped kids.

What spiritual realities do you encounter in this work?

We have been under spiritual attack especially for the last ten years because I believe in bringing hope for a Savior is really stepping on Satan’s toes

We’re stepping on Voodoo - a lot of people think it’s a cool religion, but it wouldn’t be possible to exaggerate the effect of Voodoo on the country

I have 150 employees --every time they are sick they come running in saying someone has put a curse on them and this response even after doing daily Bible Studies with them

Every time I go into the morgue there are vats of human body parts. Remember the Miami woman who went down to Haiti and came back with a human head in her suitcase two weeks ago?

Even having our funerals - for my own self I do it so these little kids know they were loved.

How do you spiritually equip yourself?

I am an avid studier of my Bible – there are day’s depression overcomes me – it’s overwhelming. Paul, the apostle, is my hero. I think of myself like him “I was the worst of sinners” - that is why God chose me to do this work.

What are the spiritual realities you encounter?

I see the demon possessed. A child in my care now, Junior, bit me and fought me and the sounds that came out of his mouth - I can’t even tell you. I felt someone had raped the child. When the government heard a child was in my care that had not been bribed to me – they took him from me and demanded my generator in exchange. Four months later I went back to the government building and I heard screaming from the building. As I walked downstairs, the screaming got louder and I saw something moving in an outdoor crowd of pigs. It was Junior, living with those pigs. I crawled under the barbed wire and took him – and he’s been in my possession ever since. I’ve had him 7 years, and I’m certain he is demon possessed and we just can’t seem to pray it out.

My bible study group and I are going to try and fast and pray now for Junior.

I have twice been asked to be an Observer of the elections – it’s a real honor. Aristide’s was a corrupt election, I saw it.

A year ago when Aristide fled the country, the Chimera or secret police service (the ghost) held 62 of my handicapped and terminally ill orphans and employee’s hostage. I had to fly in from Aspen and negotiate for them.

How dangerous has it become for you?

March 2/05 – The Wall St. Journal reported an assassination attempt on my life by the Chimera. By the grace of God, my command of Creole got perfect that night and I was able to talk to the guy and he had mercy because I had helped one of his friends. I even got my car back washed.

I pray every day on my knees that Preval will seek Jesus. It will be only thing that will heal this country - the only thing. A Christian coalition party even ran – loads of money was donated but they came in 17 out of 33. But God has a bigger plan -- He can change Preval’s heart?

I would stake my heart on the fact that if godly men and women rule that country, it will thrive. The poverty will go away. SIN rules the land. Haiti is a graveyard for missionaries. If something does not change, this is fertile ground for terrorism – poverty breeds anger, and anger breeds hatred and that’s exactly what we have here – the Haitians think America can help them but they don’t – and so they hate Americans right now.

In every effort – corruption has stood between the poor and us.

I have been sued so many times by government officials – they want my land, my truck.

Do you have children of your own?

We made a conscious decision to not have children because I could not leave a child to go care for those in Haiti

Is it okay to you that your faith is quiet?

Jesus never went out into the world and said ‘I’m a Christian’, He just went out on their level - if I went in shouting ‘I’m a Christian’ – they would never hang out with me.they would feel I’m a threat.

Why has the Press not reported you are a Christian?

I always, always tell the reporters I am a Christian and Satan does not allow it to get in the news. The last time I went to Haiti (because of the election) many people wanted to travel with me, and the only thing I asked was “please tell people that I just want God to be proud of his servant”. I want people to see God in me; I want to never waste an opportunity for god.

Even Oprah cut me off when I tried to say my testimony.

The guy who started EBay founded a production company and now they are doing a movie on my life. For a whole year I fought back and forth that my Christian story be in there and that they can tell my story about the rape when I was little - everything. The only thing I ask is that you represent my life now as a Christian – and it blew the deal – but I prayed and prayed and my pastor called and we got signed. The testimony will be in the movie.

I just finished my book, Angels of a lower flight – it has gone to editor but I don’t have a publisher yet.

The book is about coming back to God – its my testimony to my Savior - it is really open and straightforward – even forgiven sin has consequences and I talk about it and also the blessings. I have seen a lot of pain. My brother was gay, got Aids, suffered, and killed himself at age 26.

XXXCHURCH.COM -#1 CHRISTIAN PORN SITE
www.xxxchurch.com

From porn shows in Las Vegas to an all-guys gathering in Toronto, XXXchurch.com has opened the discussion about men who are struggling with pornography. Listen Up was at a recent “Guys Night Out” with XXXChurch.com…

XXXchurch exists to bring awareness, openness, accountability and recovery to the church, society and individuals in the issues of pornography and to begin to provide solutions through non-judgmental and creative means. XXXchurch is here to make you think, react and to decide where you stand on the issues of porn. We're not here to sling mud, but to shove the envelope and try and do some good.

Our Target

Teenagers Fact of life is that teens like to look at porno. Hey, who doesn't? The problem is that nobody is giving them the other side of the story. We tell them to stay away from crack and not to drink too much, but how come no one is letting them know that Porn Boulevard is a dead end.

The Dabblers Hey a little porn never hurt anybody, right? C'mon dude! Get a clue. A little porn is like a little heroine. It's gonna jack you up one way or the other. I know this may be a surprise to some of you, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. You have got to decide what type of person you are going to be.

The Church and Church Leaders How come no one is talking about sex, porno, hot chicks and all the other things that we deal with on a daily basis at church on Sunday mornings? C'mon now! Our society is looking for some real answers and the truth. It's OK to talk about boobs, sex and porn. Let's get real and get in the gutter to try to help some people.

The Founders

Mike Foster and Craig Gross are the founders of XXXchurch.com. These young pastors are putting a new fresh face on Christianity. Their message is powerful and relevant to today's culture as they encourage individuals to live a life of outrageous Christianity. It's about taking a risk and connecting with the people in a relevant way. Find out more about Mike and Craig at www.TheGoofballs.com

X3 Strategy

The Name XXXchurch is provocative, memorable, and it combines the seedy and the sacred. Enough said.

The Tag Line The "#1 Christian Porn Site" is what we are. We also like it cuz it ticks stuffy old religious people off.

The Vibe It's hip, relevant, irreverent, honest, fun and designed for people just like you.

Here is what you can do right now!

The dirty little secret is not going away. It's a big, hairy monster that has its teeth in our society. Let's not play stupid here and think that if we just ignore it, it will go away.

Here a porn, there a porn, everywhere a porn porn. It's everywhere! It's big! It's nasty! It's corporate and it shows no sign of going away. Don't you think it's about time for us to start getting honest about our lives and the world we live in?

It would be truly naive to think that only dirty old men have this problem. Christians and Non-Christians are dealing with this. This is something that faces us all. Christians buy the videos, Pastors log onto the websites, church leaders are buying the magazines. It's our kids that are logging on and our families that are being affected. It's our problem and so what are we going to do about it?

1. Talk About It. Get the collective conversation started. If you're waiting for someone else to bring it up you just might be waiting a long time. Talk to your friends, your buddies and especially your kids.

2. Get Your Crap Together. Get your crap together. You're either part of the problem or the solution. We can't be complaining if in our own lives we are indulging in it.

3. Get Involved. We need your help gosh darn it! Help us out! Get involved in one of our campaigns, buy a T-shirt and download our flyers. Do something! Standing on the sidelines is for wussies and old ladies.

REPORT FORM: https://www.cybertip.ca/en/cybertip/report_form/

The National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC), an integral part of Canada’s National Police Services, was created to help protect children from online sexual exploitation.

The NCECC:

  • is a national clearing house and coordination centre for all international requests to conduct investigations in Canada related to child sexual exploitation on the Internet;

  • provides support to peace officers, in particular investigators involved in files dealing with child sexual exploitation on the Internet;

  • builds relationships and collaborates with domestic and international partners to raise awareness and combat criminal activity which targets, exploits and abuses children; and,

  • will help develop standards and guidelines within Canada and provide many levels of support to law enforcement investigators involved in files dealing with the sexual exploitation of children on the Internet.

Youth has been one of the RCMP’s five strategic priorities for a number of years. The issue of online sexual exploitation of children is one that has gained a greater profile over the past several years. The Internet has changed the way child sexual exploitation offences are committed, investigated and prosecuted. It has also destabilized the ability of Canada’s criminal justice system to respond effectively to this type of criminal activity. As part of the Government of Canada’s National Strategy to protect children from online sexual exploitation, Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan announced the expansion of the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC) for law enforcement and the expansion of Manitoba-based Cybertip.ca on May 12, 2004.

Another component of the National Strategy is allowing Industry Canada's SchoolNet www.schoolnet.ca to pursue partnerships with the educational sector, the private sector and local and provincial levels of government to educate and raise public awareness about the Internet. Research, learning activities and other online resources will all promote the safe use of the Internet to children, youth, parents, teachers and youth professionals.

The NCECC team members include serious crime investigators and specialized, skilled civilians dedicated to protecting the world’s children from Internet-based sexual exploitation, whether it originates in Canada or abroad. Partnerships with all sectors - police, government, community, associations and the private sector - are key to the success of the coordination centre’s efforts.

LORNA’S WRAP

I find it uncomfortable to talk about pornography, so why should we put this on Listen Up? Perhaps, because what's most private, is also most public. This issue affects every one of our families at some time. Today we listened to people who said while they interacted with pornography, they could not get away from the reality that God was speaking to them about who they were. The inner life that was attracted to porn, was an inner life that God was looking in on. At listenuptv.com you'll find more on what we've learned this week about God's plan for pornography and our lives. Freedom, dignity, self control, peace and joy, this is all part of God's creation for the sex drive.

Overcoming Porn & Sex Addiction

Sexual addiction and porn addiction are difficult topics to discuss, difficult to diagnose, and even more difficult to remove. One of the elements that makes sexual sin difficult to deal with in the life of a Christian man is that it is often covered by a layer of secrecy and shame.

Despite these difficulties, sexual sin can be conquered. If you desire to change, God can heal and bring restoration.

What do you need to do to recover from sexual sin? There are many ways that men have successfully dealt with sexual sin in their lives. Most often, breaking a porn addiction involves some combination of God, real-world accountability, the incorporation of new disciplines, counseling, and hard work.

What are the key components in breaking addiction?

  • Clearly define the problem. One common element that we believe must be present in any recovery program is a clear definition of the problem. This includes gaining an understanding of how sexual addiction starts, how it is fueled, and the impact it has on us and the people we love.

  • Start with a Biblical foundation. It is vital for a Christian man that the solution be authored from a foundation that is Bible-based. Sexuality and sprituality are tightly linked and trying to solve one without the other will prove futile. Understanding the problem from a biblical perspective will allow you to put in place a solution that is also centered around your faith.

  • Have a plan. No recovery program can remove sexual addiction overnight. Nor can any one plan solve every different kind of sexual addiction in every kind of man. But, for a plan to work, we believe that it must have clear, concise recovery steps that the participant can follow.

  • Take action. You won't finish something that you are afraid to start. Often the one thing that prevents a guy from getting help is that he has to tell someone he needs help. That process of disclosure is often perceived to be too painful, and so the problem just continues--and often escalates. So whatever you do, find a course of action that you are able to start quickly--and in a confidential setting. Just like any cancer, early treatment can often mean better, faster, more thorough recovery.

BUILDING SMARTER MARRIAGES IN A SEXUALLY BROKEN WORLD

While viewing pornography can seem like an individual choice, its consequences affect the entire family. According to Dr. John Auxier, Dean of Trinity Western Seminary, couples often struggle silently with issues of sexuality and yet they have few sources to turn to. This is why the upcoming Smarter Families Conference in Langley, B.C. has focused on “Building Smarter Marriages in a Sexually Broken World.” As Chair of the June 2nd conference, Dr. Auxier shares his expertise on the damaging consequences of pornography to both the family and the individual….

Sex, intimacy and God

Smarter Families Conference 2006 gives hope to the “sexually broken”

Jobs, children and other time demands can challenge intimacy in any marriage. But none can be more detrimental to marital bliss than unresolved issues of sexual trauma. Ignoring histories of sexual abuse and addiction can be “toxic” to developing emotional, spiritual, and physical intimacy. On June 2 and 3 Smarter Families 2006, Canada's leading marriage ministries conference, will discuss issues of "Sex, Intimacy and God: Building Smarter Marriages in a Sexually Broken World" at ACTS Seminaries at Trinity Western University. Featuring plenary speaker Doug Weiss, PhD, this year's conference will provide the tools for growth and recovery in all levels of marital intimacy from time management to sexual trauma.

“All couples have intimacy needs whether they recognize it or not,” says John Auxier, PhD, Dean of Trinity Western Seminary and Chair of Smarter Families Canada. “Over time, intimacy gets eaten away by life’s demands. But in today’s world, more and more Christians struggle with wounds from sexual brokenness due to trauma, past relationships and struggles with sexual addictions.”

In the winter of 2005, an international survey of pastors reported the eight top sexual issues damaging to their congregation are: 57% pornography addiction, 34% sexually active never-married adults, 30% adultery of married adults, 28% sexually active teenagers, 16% sexual dissatisfaction, 14% unwed pregnancy, 13% sexually active previously married adults, and 9% sexual abuse (More Sex, Please.  Christianity Today International, Winter 2005.)

“Couples often struggle silently with issues of sexuality with few sources to turn to,” says Auxier. Unresolved sexual issues erode healthy marriages into less happy and less functional relationships. Couples begin to drift apart and become vulnerable to feelings of resentment and even affairs.

“Wives of porn addicts experience depression, rejection and anger,” says Auxier. “And they have nowhere to go. Pastors aren’t typically trained to help in this area of ministry. Even Christian professional counsellors often have minimal background in this topic.”

Smarter Families aims to restore marital intimacy holistically focussing on the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects intimacy. This year’s conference offers specific tracks in couple enrichment, parenting resources, marriage ministry and recovery ministry.

“There are practical, Godly answers to most of these issues,” says Doug Weiss, PhD a Licensed Professional Counsellor for 17 years. With over 15 years of successful recovery from sexual abuse and addiction, Weiss brings a storehouse of knowledge on the process of recovering from sexual trauma. His expertise has been sought after by Oprah, Sally Jesse Raphael, Leeza, Fox Files and others. He’s also authored numerous books including: “The Final Freedom: Pioneering Sexual Addiction Recovery” and “Partners: Healing from His Addiction.”

“In two days, those who participate in this conference will walk away with a much happier and biblical perspective on God’s gift of sex,” says Weiss who’s currently the executive director of Heart to Heart Conselling Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “They’ll discover that God doesn’t have sexual hang-ups. They’ll also learn how to be free from worldly ideas about sexuality that limit them. They’ll learn how to have the best sex of their life.”
