If
you live in North America, you’ve probably heard of HPV - Human
Papillomavirus – a sexually transmitted virus that’s one of the leading

CHERYL THOMAS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF PREGNANCY SUPPORT SERVICES www.capss.com
According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, the average age of
first sexual intercourse among young people in this country has been
steadily declining and now stands at 16.5 years for both males and
females. The same survey reveals that among teens aged 15 to 19, 30
percent of girls and 40 percent of boys have had more than one sexual
partner in the previous 12 months. Rates of sexually transmitted
infections are also on the increase every year from 1998 to 2002.
Cheryl Thomas is a former executive director of the London Crisis
Pregnancy Centre, and the current Chair of the Christian Association
Pregnancy Support Services. She encourages teens with relevant talks
about sexual integrity and purity.
FACTS ABOUT TEENS & SEX
Research Funded by Health Canada in 2002
surveyed 11,082 students in Grades 7, 9 & 11
65% grade 9 students believe a vaccine exists to prevent aids
10% grade 11 girls reported having been pregnant
50% grade 11 students did not know you could have STI but have no signs
1/3 grade 9 students have had oral sex
less than ½ grade 9 students use condom during sexual intercourse
By age 35, 50% of the population will have acquired a STD Handsfield HH. 1992
The group at highest risk for all STD’s are sexually active teenagers and young adults aged 14-22
1960 - of all births to young women under 20, only 15% were non-marital
1991- 71% were non-marital
“It is now recognized that Canada is in the midst of an adolescent STD epidemic.” Medical Post 1992
They’ve been described as “models on a mission.”
It’s a fashion movement for young women that’s sweeping
North America. It’s called, “Pure Fashion,” and their
mission is to show girls they can be modest, feminine and fashionable,
without being frumpy.
Any time you start giving out opinions about other
people’s sexuality its very risky business. But what if there’s good
reason to do so? Like today we learned of national plans to try and
curb the harm sexually transmitted diseases are causing to teenagers.
What formed today’s program is a Christian view of the human body. We
wanted to ask what does God have in mind for our body. No sex outside
of a life long marriage commitment? Yes - millions enjoy sex
wonderfully that way. Disease free, a disciplined approach informed by
a view bigger than our own personal feelings. I’ve written more on this
on my blog and there is much more on this on our website this week
because views on sex are important to get right. Spiritual ideas that
impact physical reality.
