Pat O’Brien is with the British Columbia and Canadian Humanist
Associations. Pat is also President of Penguin Films and has
recently produced a documentary entitled “Without God: The Story
of Secular Humanism” - an in-depth look at Secular Humanism in
Canada.
Radio show host Drew Marshall is in the process of doing what he calls
“The 5 churches experiment”. The idea was inspired by
Hemant Mehta, an atheist who sold his soul on Ebay for $504 to Pastor
Jim Henderson. What began as a bizarre online sale, turned into
an interesting dialogue about how Atheists view the church – Drew
Marshall is hoping for a similar dialogue.
DR. JORDAN PETERSON
Professor of Psychology, University of Toronto
Perhaps not everyone identifies with having a religious faith, but
Professor Jordan Peterson says everyone has a belief in
something. Dr. Peterson has recently authored “Maps of
Meaning: The Architecture of Belief” which led to a 13-part
television series airing on TV Ontario and can also we viewed here: http://psych.utoronto.ca/~peterson/mom.htm
Mark Ritchie is a passionate Scotsman, who loves engaging people on
matters of faith. He has developed a theatre presentation he
calls “Tale of Three Journeys” – which follows three
people on their journey of faith. The three journeys are towards
compassion, purpose, and towards God.
Today we looked at the revival in atheism and why
some authors claim I’m foolish to believe in God. Here’s one reason
why I couldn’t disagree more. It’s your conscious. How you know how
to love, imagine, create, how to live. We can all point to endless
examples where people have hurt the world and themselves because their
inner conscious just wasn’t adequate. So what should inform, educate
and ultimately comfort our conscience? A helpful reminder of this is
found in the work of Dr. Karl Menninger, the famous healer who
introduced psychology to the public in the 1930's. He wrote his epic
work “Whatever Became of Sin?” because he was worried the pulpits of
the land were becoming morally silent and it would only increase mental
suffering and disease among humanity. He begged the world to find
its spiritual connection because he wanted people to stop hurting. A
complex moral quest which needs answers outside of humanity and outside
of science.
Those are the spiritual realities this revival in
atheism cannot answer. So, in looking for the spiritual connection to
inform my conscious, I turn to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus,
who said, come, I have everything life needs. God is wanting to find
you – that’s why this discussion even exists.
