Let’s Talk
“How do you feel when your sports hero falls?”
Today on Listen Up, we examine the sport celebrity phenomenon – are athletes the right people to be looking up to?
We
all have our idyllic sports heroes who make us proud; persevere against
all odds and inspire us with their remarkable abilities. But alongside
our heroes there’s a long list of convicted pro athletes - Mike Tyson,
Michael Vick, Marion Jones, Rob Ramage, Pete Rose, and Barry Bonds.
Known for his take-no-prisoners debating style and dry wit, Bob McCown
is host of The Fan’s “Prime Time Sports,” syndicated
throughout Canada on radio and simulcast nationally on Rogers
Sportsnet. Prime Time has been the number one sports radio program in
Canada for 17 consecutive years. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, but now
resides in Toronto.
Dr. Stanley Teitelbaum is the author of “Sports Heroes, Fallen
Idols” - it examines why so many celebrity athletes have fallen
to off-the-field misbehavior.
One man who has exemplified character and grace on and off the field is
Argos head coach, Michael “Pinball” Clemons. Listen Up
caught up with Coach Clemons at the Argos training field.
Well, what interested me today was sports
psychologist Dr. Stanley Teitelbaum telling us that our passion for
sports is all about our inner wiring for heroes - our need to champion
something, somebody. It made me think, could that be a connection to
God that is just intrinsically all through us? We’re meant to desire
something bigger, greater, better…that won’t disappoint. Big thinking
about a big God - who might reach into us even in the passion of sports!
