We’re looking back on the determination for hope in the year that was!
Today – we look behind some of the headlines of 2007. As we look
at the year in review, we went looking for stories of hope that apply
to challenges facing us for the days ahead.
You’ll also meet our Listen Up producers Dave Pascoe, Melinda
Estabrooks, and Patricia Paddey as they give us some background on
stories that showed the best of people and God working together on some
of the most challenging issues.
Lessons from Virginia Tech
It was on Monday, April 16, 2007—that the campus of Virginia Tech in
Blacksburg, Virginia descended into darkness. A lone gunman, with a
grudge against the world, took the lives of 32 people before taking his
own.
Listen Up went looking for lessons of hope and healing out of that terrible tragedy.
Contemporary Slavery
Another story that surfaced last spring that captured the
attention of much of the western world was the issue of contemporary
slavery.
We were all shocked to learn that today - in the 21st century,
slavery is still alive and well. 27-million people are living and
working in servitude.
Atheism: Is Faith Stupid?
As we saw this past year the "revival in atheism " due to books
like The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins and God is Not Great by
Christopher Hitches – Listen Up TV couldn't help but ask the questions
- is Faith really stupid and am I really foolish to believe in God?
Exposing The Secret
It's The Secret - the phenomenon that swept North America this
yea. Has The Secret of the Universe finally been uncovered? We heard
from author Rhonda Byrne about what The Secret really is and heard from
Professor John Stackhouse that The Secret promises far more than it can
deliver.
The Power of the Arts
Philadelphia was one such place where art has been used to
transform communities. With more than 2700 murals, Philadelphia is the
mural capital of the world. Listen Up traveled there recently, and
uncovered stories of how this particular art form is bringing healing –
to artists, and to entire communities.
Afghanistan on the Ground
Our last highlight from the past year came from an unlikely
place – earlier this year, our producer Dave Pascoe traveled to
Afghanistan and found that amidst conflict and turmoil, stories of hope
are emerging.
What strikes me about looking back over the past year is the
consequences that flow out of the human ability for free will. In 2008
we’ll be faced again with daily events, large and small that will be
influenced by our responses to generate good. The Christian view of the
future is that evil is a reality eager to destroy us, but God searches
for human hearts to partner with for days of hope and good will.
