Today we looked at the dilemma of offending people
when free speech voices its opinion on values close to the heart. We
listened to stories of hurt feelings, burned homes, jail time and war.
All of it caused by differences of opinion over religious beliefs?
Ridiculous, but true.
We
need transparency about what we believe about God and how it affects
our actions. Freedom of speech and expression protects that. It allows
us to explain and to ask questions of accountability about our
religions. It shouldn't be so complicated. I'm remembering a Bible
story where Jesus made it very simple. He said you need the faith of a
child to be part of God's kingdom (Mark 10:15). But as thousands of
years have passed since his point was made, it's gotten quite
complicated to understand what to believe and why.
Not all
beliefs are equal, they don't stand the test. Freedom of expression is
absolutely vital to monitor the world of religious pluralism we find
ourselves in. It's a good day for freedom when we realize confronting
ideas about God can be a sharp poke in our conscience. The next step is
to find out why it digs so deeply into our sensitivities.
