Today on Listen Up: Freaking Out at Forty! Researchers say the mid-life crisis is real!
The Context
A study
involving 2-million people in 72 countries around the world suggests
that both men and women are less happy in their forties than at any
other time in their lives.
It reveals a global pattern of
miserable middle age - a pattern that seems to apply regardless of
demographics. Researchers found that people everywhere follow a
U-shaped curve of psychological well being. The happiness dip in our
forties, they believe, is intrinsic to human nature and temporary. The
average, fit 70-year-old, is likely to be as happy and mentally healthy
as a 20-year-old.
Stephen Arterburn has done a lot of thinking about men and their unique
issues – including the issues that seem to crop up in the middle
years. He’s written the “Mid-Life Manual for Men”.
Dale Hanson Bourke is an award winning author and humanitarian, she had a mid-life crisis, and has written the book, Second Calling: Finding Passion & Purpose for the Rest of Your Life.
Today, we looked at a study involving 2 million
people in 72 countries that concluded the science of a mid-life crisis
is real. Freaking out at 40 is just part of our human nature. I have a
lot of experience on being in my forties. I've written about that in
this week's blog at listenuptv.com
But here's the bottom line:
my forties have been filled with temptation. There is a part of our
human nature where we choose to separate ourselves from God, and from
God's best for us. The Bible calls that sin. It's a loaded word for
mid-life crisis discussions.
But with all the doubts,
depressions and options that come along with mid-life crisis, the human
nature can steer off course from what's best. So in my forties I
realize I've read my Bible more than in any other decade. I've studied
it to find God's voice for all the options that 40 has afforded.
It's been a good mid-life, because the Bible has given me the guidance I've needed for many changes.
