Today
we're kicking off our tenth season delving deeper into one of the
biggest stories of human courage. A story that captured headlines
around the globe.
It was a July evening, and Canadian missionaries John and Eloise Bergen
were just getting ready to settle down for the night at their Kenyan
home – when they found themselves fighting for their lives.
Brutally assaulted, John and Eloise are fortunate to be alive. But in
the immediate aftermath of the attacks, they spoke a message of love
and forgiveness for their attackers. It was a move that would earn them
admiration from some; disbelief and scorn from others.
Today, in an exclusive interview with the Bergens and their family,
we’ll look at their choice to forgive. We’ll ask
what motivated it, and what makes it possible. And we’ll
explore the impact their choice is having on others.
One of the hardest things to understand about the remarkable story of
John and Eloise Bergen is their faith. Why would a 65 and 70
year old couple would say good bye to family here to care for orphans
in Africa? Why would they be planning to return after being
brutally attacked while they were doing their good work?
That kind of compassion didn’t come quickly, or out of a
vacuum.
The Bergens have spent over 50 years of learning to listen for
God’s voice. Of using their Bible to study
God’s way of working with people. Their actions in
Africa are a result of that.
A lifetime of studying why and how God cared for them, and a lifetime
of exploring and acting on the purpose God had for them. Real
Christianity, in real action.
